A visit to the Porsche Museum in Germany has been on my bucket list for years. I've seen photos of the museum and have been fascinated to see how Porsche would 'do' a museum. So we booked a hotel, packed up the car and drove for 6 hours from Chamonix, France to Stuttgart, Germany.
The museum building was designed by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects in 2005 and is truly innovative. The exterior is supported on 3 v-shaped columns giving it the appearance of floating. The mirrored ceiling on the exterior reflects people and Porsches, if you care to look up. The design of this white angled structure is like nothing I've seen before.
The interior
The interior is designed for cars and people alike. It's totally white, super clean and brightly lit to show the cars off to their best. The building is designed so that you can see the cars from many angles, up close, overhead, front and rear - a photographer's dream.
Porsche 550 Spyder
I fell in love with this car. The clean and smooth lines, the well proportioned body and the beautiful interior. Apparently it used to race quite well too, oh and James Dean owned one.
Porsche 911
I'd love to revisit the museum when they have a 911 special exhibition. The 911 just does something to me. The sleek lines, the well proportioned body and the sporty feel are just perfect in the 911. From the old to the new - yes, please, I'll take two!
Porsche 918
The 918 embodies the future of driving and it's technologies will trickle down to all of us in the not too distant future.
Porsche Ideal
The Porsche Ideal is the guiding principle that Porsche use to design and develop their cars. The principles are represented through the museum, here, you can see 'Clever' idea illustrated with the 356 Carrera GT engine.
911 Turbos
I loved this area. The 911 turbos through the ages were shown on rotating platforms. Every time I turned around there was a different view to capture.
People
The museum space works for people as well as the cars. The space gives the feeling that you can comfortably enjoy the exhibition with plenty of seating and interactive features. There's a cafe and a restaurant on site along with exterior seating. It's a friendly building.
The verdict
It was well worth the effort and I was not disappointed with the Porsche Museum experience. I strongly recommend any Porsche enthusiast to come and take a look. I think I'll be back.
